The Motocross Vault
США
Добавлен 14 май 2013
I created The Motocross Vault as a place for classic motocross enthusiast like myself to gather and celebrate the great history of the sport of motocross. I am currently a blogger and writer for PulpMX.com and have forty years of experience in and around the sport of Motocross. Over the course of my career as a racer and rider, I have owned over 50 different motorcycle and ATVs and have always had a huge passion for the sport.
Here at The Motocross Vault I plan to cover the history of the sport by looking back at the machines that have defined it. I am also going to cover important historical events and some of the classic publications have documented and enriched the sport I love over the last 50 years of American Motocross and Supercross. It is my hope that by keeping the history of the sport alive future generations will be able to appreciate the great and unique racing era I have been blessed enough to grow up in.
I hope you enjoy the ride.

1997 Suzuki RM250 Classic Motocross Test Review
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
This is a look back at Suzuki's controversial 1997 RM250. A machine that ended Jeremy McGrath's streak of Supercross championship victories. Today, the machine gets painted as a failure but the reality is that the RM was far from the epic turd many would have you believe. While perhaps not a great pro machine, the 1997 RM had a lot of good things going for it in 1997. Support The Motocross - Mo...
A lot of those bikes had tool bags 😂
Maybe do a video on the history of the CR125?
I appreciate your well thought out content. You always make your information worth watching. Great job. 👍
Do you still have your blue hood off your '87?
My dad had two blue '86s. He ran the Mickey Thompson circuit in 1988. He had a Paul Turner top end and an Answer Equalizer silencer, that I know of.
I remember the 04-05 crfs(especially the 05) being very popular xc racer conversions here in wv. Had several friends that rode and raced them with no issues other than staying on top of valvetrain maintenance. Typical honda....no frills, no b.s., solid and reliable with user friendly power that worked for mx and xc
I ended this, those old CR's are really great bikes.
Jumping 30 ft in the air and landing on the front forks what suspension could be tuned in for any rider. Adapt and be happy. 😊
the 82 i know
wow you dont look that old, im 56 an d barely remember those
When I was 13, I bought my 97 CR 125 right off the showroom floor. Still to this day one of the best bikes I’ve ever owned. My dad picked up his 99 YZ 125 a year and a half later, we had some epic battles at the local track and made some great memories. Thanks for putting these videos together, definitely reminds me of a better time 💯
After all these years, I just seen this video. I bought my 1982 PE 175 for US$1275 out the door. My first Hare scrambles on it was in 1983 there were over 30 riders in the 200 class no A or B class I remember I was dead last on the start, but I ended up lapping everyone up to second place , I’ve had it ever since and just now I bought an 84 model that’s completely restored. I haven’t picked it up yet but it’s probably one of my most memorable bikes, probably not as good as the KDX which I’ve had quite a few of or the IT but still a great bike and good memories. back around the early 90s I bought a 84 model that was imperfect shape for $525 now I just paid $2900 for this one, but it’s pretty mint and will bring back lots of memories. Thanks for posting this video. It was a good review of the good old days 😢
I bought this new at 15, because the yz was sold out and this bike came with a two-piece craftsman toolbox. The suspension was awful. It had no bottom and no top. My friend had a new yz125 and it was better in every way. I had the suspension redone by proaction, put a 250 airboot, bored the carb to 37, boyesen reeds, port work, and pc pipe and silencer. By 2000, i went from d class to b class, still on this bike. The bike was durable, ill give it that. At the end of that season, my friend let me ride his 2000 yz125 done fully by procircuit. It was so much better in every single way, from idle to over-rev it had tons more power everywhere. You couldn't feel any small bumps on the same track where i felt everything through the bars on my cr. It turned anywhere you wanted to go and would pull a gear taller through the turns. I was so impressed that i sold the cr later that year and gave myself a big pat on the back for running up front against guys with better bikes.
Didn't ward win the 87 supercross championship with it
Thanks for a great vid and wonderful trip down memory lane. Love these bikes - grew up with them all and have a special spot in my heart for them and the times I spent with them. Can't buy any of them here in Australia now - real shame. CRF450L is the biggest you can get here now. Nowhere near as much fun as a true thumper 650 playbike! 🙂
Great review, I have one that I bought 10 years ago and I can compare it to some newer bikes I have rode. Of course for motocross it's not comparable with new bikes, because has a lot of torque and power, isn't smooth and it feels heavy on air. First I have some upgrades on it to match my riding style and type of riding, I ride cross-country and Baja with she, for MX it feels heavy on air, but on the ground it feels lightweight, and is really lightweight, I measured and it's 107kg with the gas tank full. Suspension - low friction bushings and seals, front suspension reduced the highspeed damping on compression and rebound. Braking brake discs front and rear. OEM KTM front brake pads with steel line (good combo for strong and progressive feeling, the KTM pads make it more progressive) Aluminum low profile bar Engine mods- reduced exhaust length for reduced torque on mid-range, richer jetting to prevent stalling on low rpm, and to cool down on high revs, it improved even more the top end power. 17:43 17:43 The engine comparing to the Husqvarna FX 450 has more power everywhere, on top are almost similar, but the torque on the 5valve has no match! Forget, not comparable with any other 450 I have rode, but all that torque is simply too much for MX tracks. But isn't smooth like new bikes, the crankshaft counterweight it was not perfectly balanced to remove all the vibration (2006 and up are more smooth and had less vibration) The chassis seems that was designed for Baja style races, It never shakes on high speed, it's simply incredible. It's stable and it soaks big bumps and big stuff, it's crazy the way it soaks some big hits, on small hits the newer suspension are more reactive on the front. For me, this is the best chassis/ engine for Baja. Because of my riding and the 4 gear I use 14/41 transmission, the speed I don't know, but it's comparable with OEM xc bikes. With less gears😅 I simply love it and I don't plan to sell it for a new one.
Restoring an old MX bike in the 90's I spoke to an ex-semi-works rider (UK) who said the most powerful MX bike he raced was the 1985 & 86 KX500. It was so fast (he said) it would blast past anything else & was expecting them to ban it. Later models were easier & probably quicker lap times. But 85/86 were monsters he said 66bhp . But not sure how it was measured. I asked if the Power valve (KIPS) was better. Typical racer said yes a bit but the 85 came in with a bang & he loved that. He sold me a works OHLINS & ported barrel & owned the Kawasaki dealership so there must be some truth in it. BTW when I had the ohlins rebuilt the mechanic tried desperately to buy it off me.
Gotta remember who they had racing for them.......Roger DeCoster. KTM was crap for years, who went to work for them running R & D? Exactly........Roger DeCoster!
I bought the 96 model new Ended up breaking the frame. Apart from that I found it reliable for most part.
I had my '79 Husky CR390 and my Expert racing buddy had a YZ490 for sale...I stuck with my Husky for a fair bit of performance reasons...
"Form vs. Function ", so interesting paper but not "reality"....
And Suzuki ran into patent/lawsuits....Nevermind, Yamaha and Parker
Now they were getting into claiming/homologation/production versions...Heck, they'd even auction-off the race winning bike....
"Eye candy" but thats to the limit of your subjective You Tube "pronouncements" vs. just a "Presntation" for all the uniformed ......
Love the old machines and these videos.❤
would someone check out the boots this guys got on? 18:58 / 54:04 tf are they? i want them in 2024!
Taking everything into consideration ,i think its an absolute 100% best 500 made, not just because i have one lol !.. an icon of its era ,flash red ,awesome!!..in the future. They will be much collectible
I owned a 1988 RM 250 and it was a good bike.. but to say the suspension was awesome is crazy.. . It was ok at everything.. but didnt stand out as great in any aspect.. it was slow to turn.. soft front end that liked to pick its own line.. you had to man handle it to get it to turn fast.. My next upgrade was a 91 RM250 and it was night and day.. the 91 was better at EVERYTHING by a large margin.. not sure why ur bragging up the 88.. was it rideable? sure.. but it was far from a great bike.
For sure one of the greatest, 2 stroke motors of all time
Tony, the histroy of CR250, CR450/480/500, KX400/420/500, RM370/400/465/500, were sooooo excellent. I have watched them all 10 times at least. Will you please do KX250, YZ250, RM250, and open class YZ's ?
I will for sure!
I still have a gold mini trail bike and its one of my favorite colors. Actually didnt know it was only made for one year. Really cool, interesting and informative video, now I want to go ride it again.
You should learn from "Greg's Aircraft and Automobiles": atleast his stuff is factual and historically, unsubjective..
You know, but you've provided it obvious, you yo yo's where not there, yet you yak as if you were....Maybe if you're my age(63) and raced and was a mechanic, you just make your mouth known.....A good source of "history" but after that.....
Jet issues on mine
Love these old Suzuki's.
Brilliant clip, absolutely awesome to see the almighty green machine back in its prime, please do more videos, especially the history of the magnificent CR500, absolutely well done mate down to every little detail 👌👍🤙❤️
I started with a 1978 RM-125C and immediately bought one of the RM-125X (1981) full floaters when they came out. What a great bike... I have always been a Suzuki guy and a huge fan of Roger "The Man" DeCoster..(who wasn't?).. quick true story: I was doing a pit tour hosted by Bevo Forte at the Atlanta supercross many many years ago.. As we walked through the various factory semis and vans there was Roger, on his knees rolling up a Suzuki tarp. I happened to be wearing my DeCoster jacket so I asked him to sign it. What a great guy..very humble too.. As a rule I avoid meeting any of my "heroes" but this was a delight...
Cool I'm very interested, I will love this video.
I have a 99 cr 125 and I can confirm that the suspension is shit and the pj carb suck ass 😭.
Had an 86 CR80 and loved it.
Loudest bikes ever, attracted massive heat if driven off track. No good in woods with crappy range due to small gas tsnks. Also way too tall for offroad. Can do massive 3rd gear wheelies tho.
'83 cr480r is a crazy loud rig. Heat score and fire hazard in woods. Not practical for riding on tight trails.
Top quality mixture oil is vip.
Wow. What a rig. No good for Central NFL.... If you were a really big dude with experience maybe an IT 490 or that man killer....Maico 760. They are no good in tight areas. Best offroad bike overall is a KDX 200. 22O not so much.
57 now. Do not ride now
Ty bro.
Just saying. Lived and learned. Rode H2 Kawis when we were old enough to get license. Still spent alot of time offroad..
Xr 200 was not a real enduro bike. Learn how to ride a bike on xr 200, then get a PE, IT or KDX and a girlfriend without embarrassment.
2006 was last yr but maybe even better than '85 kdx 200. 220 I did not like.
You covered it better than other shows.
